Drive down the tree lined streets of Houston's Village area and pull up to a charming brick house at 2511 Sunset Blvd. Step inside and you soon realize this is no ordinary home; it is the showcase for beautiful, custom-crafted designs from a family of experienced, caring jewelers.

Since 1972, Dee Stodghill and his son Kip, have built their business based on the foundation of personal service. Each of them have a specialty and is professionally trained to give expert gemology and design advice. Their jewelry designs are imaginative and diverse, ranging from bold and modern to antique reproductions.

The Galaxie Jewelers is known for innovative, creative designs and carefully chosen, quality loose diamonds, pearls and colored gemstones from around the world. However, this family is equally well known for jewelry and watch repair, restoration, appraisals and turning "never-worn-anymore jewelry" into newly cherished pieces.

"Customer service is our primary goal," says Dee Stodghill. "We treat all jewelry with equal care. A yellow plastic bead necklace, bought in 1952 for $3 at Woolworth’s is given the same care as the stringing of a $2,000 strand of pearls for a new bride."

Speaking of brides, a large portion of the company’s business is devoted to custom-designed wedding jewelry. "This is always a happy and exciting time for couples," Dee Stodghill states. "We take the time to learn what they really want and develop their ideas into a functional piece of jewelry that meets their dreams, and their budget." Double-ring ceremonies are still the most popular and, in keeping with the times, The Galaxie Jewelers creates children’s rings in the event the bride or groom have children participating in the festivities.

Dee and Kip, and their production staff, whom have extensive training in gemology and jewelry making, use the "lost wax" process of casting for their jewelry designs. The fabrication technique is used when called for. Platinum, 18 karat, 14 karat gold, and sterling silver are the primary metals used in their design work. The Galaxie Jewelers alloys their own gold to assure value and quality. While the majority of the production is completed on the premises, specialized craftsmen, both in Houston and New York City, are called on when necessary.

"Our customers’ satisfaction is our number one goal," says Kip. This philosophy has earned the company a loyal following who visit The Galaxie Jewelers for everything from having their rings cleaned and checked, to selecting a one-of-a-kind piece to mark a momentous occasion. The company is now working with second and third generations of their original customers.
